Bank Account Name Change Through Gazette
A difference in the name recorded in a bank account can create difficulties during KYC verification, PAN validation, cheque processing, loan applications, fixed-deposit maturity, tax reporting, insurance claims and other financial transactions. The issue may be as small as a typing mistake or missing middle name, or it may involve a substantial change such as adoption of a completely new name, addition or removal of a surname, marriage-related name change or restoration of a previous surname after divorce.
The correct procedure depends on whether the applicant is seeking a minor correction or has actually made a legal name change. A spelling error entered by the bank may often be corrected through the bank’s customer-profile or KYC update process by submitting documents that already contain the correct name. Gazette publication is generally more relevant where a person has intentionally adopted a materially different name and needs a formal document connecting the old name with the new name.
Even after a Gazette notification has been published, the bank account does not change automatically. Banks are required to identify and verify their customers under the applicable KYC framework. The account holder must therefore submit a separate application to the bank and provide the identity, tax and name-change documents required for verification. RBI describes KYC as the process through which a regulated entity, including a bank, obtains and verifies information about the customer’s identity and address.

Does Gazette Publication Automatically Change the Bank Account Name?
No. A Gazette notification creates an official public record of a declared name change, but it does not directly modify the customer information stored by a bank. Every bank maintains its own account and KYC database, and the customer must separately request an update.
The bank may ask the applicant to submit a name-change form, Gazette notification, updated identity proof, PAN details, photograph, specimen signature or other supporting records. It may also require the customer to visit a branch or complete another identity-verification process.
Official bank instructions show that the documents depend on the reason for the change. HDFC Bank’s published process lists a marriage certificate, Gazette notification or court affidavit, as applicable, along with identity proof. ICICI Bank’s instructions state that an identity document in the new name should ordinarily be submitted and that, where such a document is unavailable, a marriage certificate or Gazette copy may be required.
Therefore, Gazette publication should be treated as an important supporting document in an appropriate case, not as a universal order requiring every bank to immediately replace the existing name.
First Determine Whether the Case Is a Correction or a Name Change
The most important step is to understand the nature of the difference. Applicants often begin Gazette filing merely because two documents contain different spellings, even though the matter may only require direct correction.
Minor Name Correction
A minor correction normally involves an error in an existing name rather than adoption of a different identity.
Examples may include:
- “Sandeep” recorded as “Sandip”
- Missing middle name
- Incorrect spacing between names
- One letter typed incorrectly
- Initials entered instead of the complete name
- Surname omitted because of a bank data-entry error
Where Aadhaar, PAN, Passport or another accepted document already shows the correct name, the bank may permit a direct correction through its KYC or customer-profile update process.
SBI, for example, publishes a specific affidavit format for minor correction in a customer’s name, demonstrating that every name discrepancy is not necessarily treated as a complete legal name change.
Substantial or Legal Name Change
A legal name change generally involves a deliberate decision to use a materially different name in future records.
It may involve:
- Replacing the complete first and last name
- Adding a new surname
- Removing an existing surname
- Replacing one surname with another
- Adopting a different first name
- Changing the name for personal, religious or professional reasons
- Restoring an earlier name after divorce
- Changing the sequence or structure of the name substantially
In such cases, Gazette publication may help create a formal link between the name already recorded in the bank and the new name proposed by the customer.
When May Gazette Notification Be Required for a Bank Account Name Change?
Gazette notification is more likely to be relevant where the proposed bank-account name cannot be treated as a simple correction and the applicant must establish continuity between two materially different names.
Complete Name Change
Suppose the bank account is maintained in the name Deepak Kumar Malviya, but the applicant has formally adopted the name Devansh Raj Mehta. Because the old and new names are substantially different, the bank may require reliable evidence showing that both names belong to the same person.
A Gazette notification may form part of that evidence, but the bank may still ask for an identity document in the new name before completing the update.
Addition of a Surname
Where the existing bank record contains only a first name and the applicant later adopts a surname, the change may be treated as more than a clerical correction.
For example:
Existing bank name: Tamanna
Proposed name: Tamanna Chauhan
The bank may ask for a Gazette notification, updated identity proof or another acceptable document connecting both versions.
Removal or Replacement of a Surname
A person may decide to discontinue an existing surname or replace it with another surname.
For example:
Existing bank name: Shalini Tiwari
Proposed name: Shalini Mehra
The bank may examine the reason for the change and ask for a Gazette notification, marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order or updated KYC document, depending on the facts.
Adoption of a New First Name
Changing “Mohit Verma” to “Manav Verma” is generally different from correcting the spelling of “Mohit.” The person is adopting a different first name, and a formal name-change record may therefore be required.
Name Change for Personal, Religious or Professional Reasons
A person may adopt a different name for personal, religious, social, professional or other lawful reasons. Where the proposed name has no obvious connection with the existing bank record, Gazette publication may help establish an official documentary trail.
The applicant should finalise the exact spelling and sequence of the new name before publication. Using one version in the Gazette, another in PAN and a third in the bank application may result in additional objections.
Restoration of a Previous Name
After divorce or another change in personal circumstances, a person may wish to restore an earlier surname. The bank may ask for a divorce decree, marriage certificate, earlier identity documents, Gazette notification or updated KYC proof.
The documents required will depend on whether the previous name already appears in the bank’s historical records and whether the identity connection is clear.

When Gazette Notification May Not Be Necessary
Gazette publication is not compulsory for every difference appearing in a bank account.
Bank Data-Entry Error
Where the applicant originally submitted the correct name but the bank entered it incorrectly, the matter should normally be presented as rectification of the bank’s record.
The applicant may submit:
- Existing Aadhaar
- PAN card
- Passport or another identity document
- Written correction request
- Bank’s customer-profile update form
- Old account-opening record, where available
A Gazette filing may be unnecessary where the applicant has never adopted a different name.
Minor Spelling Difference
Suppose the bank account shows Ritesh Agrawal, while Aadhaar and PAN consistently show Ritesh Agarwal. If the difference is merely a spelling error and all principal documents already contain the correct version, the bank may process it as a correction.
Expansion of Initials
A bank record may show P. K. Nair, while the applicant’s current identity documents show Pradeep Kumar Nair. Where identity continuity is clear, the bank may permit the complete name to be recorded without Gazette publication.
However, if the expansion produces a materially different identity or conflicts with other records, the bank may ask for additional documentation.
Marriage-Related Surname Change
A marriage certificate together with updated identity documents may be accepted by some banks for a surname change after marriage. HDFC Bank’s official name-change process expressly identifies a marriage certificate as one of the possible supporting documents, depending on the reason for the change.
Gazette may still be requested where the available documents do not adequately connect the maiden and married names.
Correct Name Already Appearing in Updated KYC Documents
Where Aadhaar, PAN, Passport and other major records already contain the same correct name and only the bank record remains outdated, the applicant should first check whether the bank can make a direct KYC update.

Documents Required for Bank Account Name Change Through Gazette
There is no single document list that applies to every bank. The documents depend on the reason for the change and whether the applicant already has an identity document in the new name.
1. Bank Name-Change or KYC Update Form
The applicant may be required to complete the bank’s prescribed form for updating the customer’s name, signature, mode of operation or KYC details.
The form should clearly state:
- Existing account-holder name
- Proposed or corrected name
- Account number
- Customer ID
- Reason for the request
- Registered mobile number
- List of documents enclosed
The new name should be written exactly as it appears in the supporting documents.
2. Gazette Notification
Where the case involves a substantial legal name change, the applicant may submit a clear copy of the Gazette publication containing the old and new names.
The bank may examine whether:
- The old name matches the existing bank record
- The new name matches the requested bank name
- The publication is complete and legible
- The Gazette details appear genuine and verifiable
- Other identifying particulars are consistent
If the Gazette contains an incorrect spelling, incomplete name or different sequence, the bank may refuse to rely on it without clarification or further correction.
3. Identity Document in the New Name
The bank may require an updated officially valid document or another identity record accepted under its KYC procedure.
Depending on the bank and applicant’s circumstances, this may include:
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- Voter Identity Card
- Proof of possession of Aadhaar
- NREGA job card
- Another accepted KYC document
ICICI Bank’s published procedure specifically refers to submission of an identity document in the new name and provides for a marriage certificate or Gazette copy where a new-name document is unavailable.
4. PAN Card or PAN Details
The name appearing against PAN should be compared with the proposed bank-account name. A difference between PAN and bank records may affect tax reporting, TDS, deposits, investments or other financial services.
The applicant should ordinarily update the name associated with the existing PAN rather than applying for another PAN number merely because the name has changed.
ICICI Bank’s published terms state that the customer should also update the name with the relevant tax authority while retaining the same tax identification number.
5. Name-Change Affidavit
An affidavit may record:
- Applicant’s old name
- Proposed new name
- Reason for the change
- Confirmation that both names belong to the same person
- Applicant’s address and identifying details
An affidavit may support the application, but it may not be sufficient by itself for every substantial name-change request. The bank may still require Gazette publication or an updated identity document.
6. Marriage Certificate
For a surname change after marriage, the marriage certificate may establish the connection between the earlier and married names. The applicant may also be asked to submit updated PAN, Aadhaar, Passport or another identity proof.
7. Divorce Decree or Court Order
Where a person wants to restore an earlier name after divorce, the bank may ask for the divorce decree and updated KYC documents. A court order may be relevant where the name change arises from a judicial proceeding.
Only submitting an isolated page that does not identify the parties or contain the operative portion may not be sufficient.
8. Existing Banking Documents
The applicant may also be asked to produce:
- Passbook
- Cheque book
- Debit card
- Recent bank statement
- Customer ID details
- Recent photograph
- Specimen signature
If the applicant wants to change the signature along with the name, the signature update should be specifically requested. A name change does not automatically alter the specimen signature.

Step-by-Step Process for Bank Account Name Change Through Gazette
Step 1: Compare the Name Across All Important Records
The process should begin with a careful comparison of the name appearing in the bank account and all major identity documents. The applicant should check the bank account, Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Driving Licence, Voter ID, Birth Certificate, educational certificates, marriage certificate and any existing affidavit or Gazette notification.
This comparison helps determine whether the error is limited only to the bank record or whether the applicant has different name variations across several documents. For example, the bank account may contain a short name, PAN may contain initials and Aadhaar may show a complete name with a surname. In such a case, changing only the bank account without examining the remaining documents may create another inconsistency.
Where multiple records contain different names, the applicant should not immediately select one version merely because it appears in a recently issued document. The correct approach is to identify the name that is legally supported, consistently used and intended to be maintained across future records.
Step 2: Identify Whether the Matter Is a Correction or a Legal Name Change
After comparing the records, the applicant should determine the exact nature of the difference. The matter may involve a typing error, minor spelling correction, missing surname, addition or removal of a surname, replacement of an existing surname, expansion of initials, marriage-related change, restoration of an earlier name or complete adoption of a new name.
This distinction is important because every type of difference does not require Gazette publication. A small spelling error or bank data-entry mistake may sometimes be corrected directly through the bank’s KYC update process. On the other hand, where the applicant has deliberately adopted a new first name, changed the surname or replaced the complete name, formal name-change documents may be required.
The applicant should therefore avoid beginning Gazette filing until it is reasonably clear that the matter is a genuine legal name change and not merely a clerical correction.
Step 3: Finalise the Exact Name to Be Used in Future Records
Before preparing an affidavit, newspaper publication or Gazette application, the applicant should finalise the exact form of the new name. This includes the first name, middle name, surname, name sequence, use or removal of initials, spacing and spelling.
Even a minor difference in the selected name can create difficulties later. For example, publishing “Rohan Kumar Mehta” in the Gazette but requesting “Rohan K. Mehta” in PAN and “Rohan Mehta” in the bank account may result in continued KYC mismatch.
The applicant should preferably use one consistent name format in the Gazette, Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, bank account and other important records. The final name should therefore be reviewed carefully before any permanent publication or correction application is submitted.
Step 4: Complete Gazette Publication Where It Is Actually Required
Where the applicant has genuinely adopted a new name, Gazette publication may form part of the legal name-change process. Depending on the applicable procedure, the applicant may be required to prepare a name-change affidavit, publish the declaration in a newspaper, complete the prescribed Gazette application, submit identity and address documents, provide photographs, sign an undertaking or declaration and pay the applicable publication fee.
The exact Gazette procedure is not uniform throughout India. Central Gazette and State Gazette authorities may follow different application forms, document lists, fee structures, publication formats and submission methods. Some authorities may require physical documents, while others may provide an online or partly online procedure.
The applicant should therefore first determine whether a Central Gazette or State Gazette process is appropriate for the intended purpose. It should not be assumed that every Gazette publication will automatically be accepted by every bank or authority.
Step 5: Update the Necessary Identity and Tax Records
Gazette publication does not automatically update Aadhaar, PAN, Passport or any other identity database. Separate correction or name-change applications are generally required before the respective authorities.
Depending on the bank’s policy, the applicant may be asked to submit an updated PAN, Aadhaar, Passport or another accepted identity document in the new name before the bank account can be changed. In some cases, the bank may consider the Gazette notification together with the existing KYC records. In other cases, it may insist that at least one principal identity document be updated first.
The order of correction should be planned according to the available documents, the nature of the change and the requirements of the concerned bank. Applicants should avoid updating different records in different name formats.
Step 6: Obtain the Bank’s Official Name-Change or KYC Form
The applicant should obtain the prescribed name-change, customer-information update or KYC modification form from the concerned bank. The form may be available at the home branch, another eligible branch, the bank’s official website, internet-banking portal or mobile-banking application.
For a minor correction, the bank may permit an online or simplified request. However, in a substantial name-change matter, visiting the branch may be more appropriate because the bank may need to verify original documents, photograph, signature and customer identity.
Before submitting the form, the applicant should also confirm whether changing the customer name at the customer-ID level will update all linked accounts or whether separate requests will be required for cards, deposits, loans, lockers and other financial products.
Step 7: Submit the Application With Complete Supporting Documents
The application should clearly mention the name currently recorded in the bank, the proposed new name, the account number, customer ID and the reason for the requested change. The applicant should also provide a list of the documents enclosed with the application.
Depending on the facts of the case, the bank may ask for the Gazette notification, updated identity proof, PAN details, name-change affidavit, marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, recent photograph or other supporting records.
Self-attested copies should be submitted where required, while original documents should be carried for verification. The bank may also verify the registered mobile number, email address, existing signature, proposed signature, PAN information, photograph and details originally provided at the time of account opening.
The applicant should ensure that the spelling and sequence of the requested name match the supporting documents exactly.
Step 8: Obtain a Written Acknowledgement
After submitting the application, the customer should obtain and preserve written proof of submission. This may include a stamped copy of the application form, service-request number, SMS confirmation, email acknowledgement or branch receipt.
The acknowledgement becomes important where the request remains pending, is returned for clarification or is processed only in some parts of the banking system. It also helps the customer refer to the exact application date and service request while following up with the branch or grievance department.
Oral assurance from a bank employee should not be treated as a substitute for a written or electronic acknowledgement.
Step 9: Verify Every Linked Banking and Financial Product
After receiving confirmation of the name update, the customer should not assume that the change has been reflected across every banking service. The updated name should be checked in the savings or current account, passbook, account statement, cheque book, debit card, credit card, net-banking profile, mobile-banking profile, UPI profile, fixed deposits, recurring deposits, loan account, demat account, locker records and nomination details.
Where the customer maintains multiple accounts under the same customer ID, each account should be verified separately. A change in the primary savings account may not automatically update a credit card, loan, investment account or locker record.
The customer may also need to request a fresh cheque book, replacement debit or credit card, revised fixed-deposit receipt or updated nomination record. Any remaining mismatch should be reported to the bank immediately so that it does not create difficulties during future transactions, tax verification, maturity payments or claims.

Can the Bank Return or Reject the Name-Change Request?
Yes. A bank may return the application, keep it pending or refuse to process it where the documents do not sufficiently establish the customer’s identity or the connection between the old and new names.
Common reasons include:
- New name is not supported by an accepted identity document
- Gazette, PAN and Aadhaar contain different spellings
- Old name in the Gazette does not match the bank record
- Gazette copy is incomplete or unreadable
- Application form contains inconsistent information
- Applicant’s signature does not match the existing record
- Joint-account formalities are incomplete
- Account is frozen, dormant or under legal restriction
- Marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order is missing
- Bank requires the customer’s physical appearance
- Bank requires additional KYC or due diligence
- Documents create doubt regarding identity continuity
- Proposed name conflicts with another verified customer record
An objection does not always amount to final rejection. The applicant should obtain the reason in writing and submit the missing or corrected documents.
What If the Bank Asks for Updated Aadhaar or PAN First?
A bank may ask the applicant to first produce an identity or tax record in the new name. This is because the bank must independently verify that the person seeking the change is the existing account holder.
For example, the following set of records may create an objection:
- Gazette: Aarav Pratap Singh
- Aadhaar: Aarav Singh
- PAN: Aarav P. Singh
- Bank request: Aarav Pratap
Although the names appear related, the applicant is requesting four different formats. The bank may ask which version is the final name and require the documents to be made consistent.
The exact spelling and format should therefore be planned before beginning separate correction applications.
Does Gazette Update the Bank, Aadhaar and PAN at the Same Time?
No. Gazette publication does not automatically update:
- Bank account
- Aadhaar
- PAN
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- Voter ID
- Birth Certificate
- Educational certificates
- Property records
- Employment records
- Insurance policies
- Demat or investment accounts
Each authority maintains a separate database and follows its own correction or name-change procedure. Approval by one authority does not compel every other authority to make the same update automatically.
Bank Account Name Change After Marriage
After marriage, a person may choose to retain the existing name, add the spouse’s surname or replace the previous surname. There is no automatic bank-account name change merely because a marriage has taken place.
Where the applicant wishes to use a married name, the bank may ask for:
- Marriage certificate
- Updated identity proof
- PAN details
- Name-change form
- Gazette notification or affidavit, where required
Because official banks list a marriage certificate as one possible supporting record, Gazette should not be presented as compulsory in every marriage-related case.
The applicant should first check whether the marriage certificate and updated KYC documents are sufficient for the concerned bank.
Bank Account Name Change After Divorce
A person may wish to restore a maiden name or an earlier surname after divorce, particularly where the married surname continues to appear in the bank account, PAN, Aadhaar or other financial records. In such cases, the bank may ask for a copy of the divorce decree, earlier identity documents showing the previous name, updated KYC records and a written request explaining the change.
Gazette publication may be useful where the applicant is formally restoring a previous name and the available documents do not clearly establish the connection between the married name and the earlier surname. However, Gazette notification is not automatically compulsory in every divorce-related case. If the divorce decree, earlier identity records and updated KYC documents sufficiently connect both names, the bank may process the request without Gazette publication.
The exact requirement depends on the concerned bank, the extent of the name difference and the records already available in the customer’s profile. The applicant should ensure that the restored name is used consistently across PAN, Aadhaar, Passport and banking records to avoid future KYC or transaction-related difficulties.
Name Change in a Joint Bank Account
A joint bank account requires slightly more careful handling because the account is connected with more than one holder. Where the name of one joint holder has changed, that person must submit a formal request along with the relevant Gazette notification, updated identity proof, PAN details, KYC form or other supporting documents required by the bank.
Depending on the mode of operation—such as jointly, either or survivor, former or survivor or anyone or survivor—the bank may also ask the remaining joint holders to provide confirmation or fresh signatures. This is generally done to ensure that the requested update does not affect the existing account mandate or create uncertainty regarding future transactions.
Documents the Bank May Request
The bank may require:
- Updated KYC or customer-information form
- Gazette notification or other name-change proof
- Fresh specimen signature
- Updated joint-account mandate
- Confirmation from the other joint holders
- Revised nomination form, where necessary
- Identity and PAN documents in the new name
A change in the name of one holder does not change the ownership rights, account share or legal position of the other joint holders. It only updates the personal and KYC details of the concerned person.
After the request is processed, all account holders should verify that the revised name appears correctly in the passbook, account statement, cheque-related records, nomination details and linked banking services.
Name Change in a Current or Business Account
A name change in a current or business account requires careful examination because the bank must first determine whether the request relates to an individual connected with the business or to the legal name of the business entity itself. These two situations are different and generally require different documents and procedures.
Personal Name Change of a Business-Related Individual
Where a proprietor, partner, director, trustee or authorised signatory has changed their personal name, the bank may ask for updated KYC documents, PAN details, Gazette notification, affidavit, marriage certificate or other supporting records, depending on the reason for the change.
In such a case, the business entity may remain the same, while only the personal details of the concerned individual are updated in the bank’s records. The bank may also require a fresh specimen signature, revised authorised-signatory form or confirmation from the other partners, directors or trustees.
Change in the Legal Name of the Business Entity
A personal Gazette notification cannot by itself change the registered name of a company, partnership firm, trust, society or other legal entity. Where the business itself has legally changed its name, the bank may require updated registration and statutory records before making any change in the current account.
Depending on the nature of the entity, the required documents may include:
- Updated registration certificate
- PAN in the new business name
- Revised GST registration
- Amended partnership deed
- Updated Memorandum and Articles of Association
- Board or partners’ resolution
- Revised business licence
- Updated authorised-signatory documents
- Customer-information or KYC modification form
The bank may also verify whether the constitution, ownership, authorised signatories and mode of operation of the account remain unchanged.
Current-account KYC requirements vary according to whether the account belongs to a sole proprietorship, partnership firm, company, trust, society or another legal structure. Therefore, the applicant should confirm the exact document list with the concerned bank before submitting the request.

Effect of a Bank Account Name Change on Cheques, Cards and UPI
Updating the name in a bank account does not always mean that every connected banking service and payment instrument will be revised automatically. Once the bank confirms that the name has been changed in its core records, the customer should separately verify how the update will affect cheque books, debit cards, credit cards, UPI, internet banking, loans, deposits and other linked services.
Cheques Issued in the Old or New Name
After the name-change request is approved, future cheque books should ordinarily be issued in the updated name. Certain banks may also treat cheques deposited or issued through the account according to the revised name recorded in the customer profile. However, the customer should not assume that every cheque already issued in the old name will continue to remain valid without confirmation.
Where post-dated cheques, security cheques or standing payment arrangements have already been issued, the customer should ask the bank whether they need to be replaced. A fresh cheque book may be required, and the bank may also ask the customer to surrender or stop using unused cheque leaves containing the earlier name.
Debit Cards and Credit Cards
The name printed on a debit or credit card may not change merely because the bank account profile has been updated. The customer may need to place a separate request for reissuance of the physical card. The bank may charge a replacement or reissuance fee according to its applicable service rules.
The applicant should also verify that the updated name appears correctly in card statements, reward-programme profiles, EMI records and any other card-linked services. Where a credit card is issued by a separate banking division or card company, an additional KYC or name-update request may be required.
UPI and Digital Banking Profiles
UPI applications may display a name based on the bank account record, KYC database or the profile maintained by the payment application. Therefore, the updated name may not appear immediately after the bank processes the request.
The customer should verify the name displayed in UPI applications, mobile banking, internet banking and beneficiary records. In some cases, removing and re-linking the bank account, refreshing the profile or contacting the concerned application’s support team may be necessary. The customer must ensure that the UPI ID, bank account and mobile number remain correctly linked during this process.
Loans, Fixed Deposits and Other Linked Accounts
A name change in the savings or current account should also be checked against loan accounts, fixed deposits, recurring deposits, lockers, demat accounts and investment products linked with the same customer ID. These records may be maintained by different departments and may not update simultaneously.
The applicant should verify the revised name on loan statements, repayment schedules, fixed-deposit receipts, interest certificates, nomination records and tax-related documents. Any remaining mismatch may create difficulty during maturity payment, loan closure, tax reporting, claim settlement or future KYC verification.
Final Verification After the Update
After the bank completes the request, the customer should check the name appearing on:
- Passbook and account statements
- Fresh cheque book
- Debit and credit cards
- UPI profile
- Mobile and internet banking
- Loan and EMI statements
- Fixed-deposit and recurring-deposit receipts
- Nomination records
- Locker or demat-linked records
A fresh cheque book, replacement card or revised physical document may require a separate service request and may be subject to the bank’s applicable charges. The customer should obtain written or digital confirmation that the name has been updated across all relevant banking services.
How Long Does a Bank Account Name Change Take?
A bank account name change does not have one standard processing period for every customer. The time required depends on how simple or complex the requested change is and whether the submitted records clearly establish the connection between the old and new names.
Simple Correction Cases
Where the request involves only a minor spelling error and the correct name is already consistently recorded in Aadhaar, PAN and other KYC documents, the bank may be able to process the correction without extensive verification. Such cases are generally easier because the customer’s identity remains clearly established.
Complete Name-Change Cases
A complete name change, surname addition, surname removal, marriage-related update or restoration of an earlier name may require more detailed scrutiny. The bank may examine the Gazette notification, updated PAN, Aadhaar, marriage certificate, divorce decree, affidavit or other supporting records before approving the change.
Factors That May Extend the Process
Processing may take longer where physical or video KYC is required, PAN details do not match, the Gazette notification needs verification, additional documents are requested or the account is jointly operated. A delay may also occur where loans, credit cards, fixed deposits, lockers or other banking products are linked with the same customer profile and require separate updates.
Important: The customer should obtain an acknowledgement or service-request number at the time of submission. The request should be considered complete only after the updated name appears correctly across the account and all linked banking services.
Bank Not Updating the Name? Follow This Escalation Process
Stage 1: Seek Clarification from the Branch
The customer should first contact the concerned branch and ask for the exact reason why the application has not been processed. Where a document is missing, unclear or inconsistent, the deficiency should be corrected and resubmitted with proper acknowledgement.
Stage 2: Submit a Written Complaint
If the request remains pending, a formal complaint should be submitted to the branch manager. It should mention the date of application, account details, service-request number, documents submitted and the specific name correction required.
Stage 3: Use the Bank’s Grievance System
Where the branch does not provide a satisfactory resolution, the customer may file a complaint through the bank’s official grievance-redressal portal. The complaint reference number and all related correspondence should be preserved.
Stage 4: Escalate to the Nodal Officer
If the issue is still unresolved, the complaint may be escalated to the bank’s nodal officer or principal nodal officer in accordance with the bank’s grievance policy.
Stage 5: Consider the Applicable RBI Complaint Mechanism
Where an eligible complaint remains unresolved after completing the bank’s internal grievance process, the customer may approach the applicable Reserve Bank of India complaint mechanism.
The complaint should clearly explain what change was requested, when the application was submitted, which documents were provided, what response was received and what final relief is being sought. Proper documentation helps the bank or grievance authority examine the matter more effectively.

Common Mistakes That Can Delay the Name Change
Publishing a Gazette Without Reviewing Existing Documents
A Gazette should not be filed merely because two records are different. If the applicant publishes another spelling without examining Aadhaar, PAN, Passport and bank records, the Gazette may create a new mismatch rather than solve the existing one.
Using Different New Names in Different Applications
The name used in the Gazette, Aadhaar, PAN and bank request should remain consistent. Differences in middle name, surname, initials or sequence may lead to repeated objections.
Treating Gazette as an Automatic Correction Order
Gazette publication records the declared name change. It does not automatically alter the records of banks or other authorities.
Ignoring the PAN Record
A bank-account name that does not match the customer’s PAN may create difficulties in tax reporting, TDS, deposits or investment transactions.
Applying for Another PAN Number
A legal name change does not ordinarily require a new PAN number. The name connected with the existing PAN should be updated through the applicable correction process.
Updating Only the Savings Account
The customer should also check cards, deposits, loans, UPI, demat accounts, lockers and nomination records.
Sharing Confidential Banking Information
No advocate, consultant or documentation provider requires the customer’s OTP, banking password, PIN or CVV for reviewing a name-change matter.
Privacy Notice
Documents shared for preliminary review or procedural support should be used only for the stated legal and documentation purpose. Applicants should share only those records that are genuinely required to examine the name difference and should conceal unrelated financial information wherever possible. OTPs, internet-banking passwords, debit-card PINs, CVV numbers and other confidential banking credentials should never be shared.
Need Guidance for Bank Account Name Change?
Life Saving Organization is a social initiative funded by LSO Legal Private Limited. It provides legal awareness, document-review support and procedural guidance across India for bank account name mismatches, surname addition or removal, marriage-related name changes, restoration of an earlier name and inconsistencies across Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Gazette records and other identity documents.
Before beginning the Gazette process, the available records may be reviewed to identify whether the matter involves a genuine legal name change, a minor spelling correction or a bank-specific KYC mismatch that may be resolved directly. Based on the documents, guidance may also be provided regarding the appropriate supporting records and the sequence of subsequent bank updates. Final Gazette publication, KYC correction and bank approval remain subject to the competent authorities and cannot be guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gazette compulsory for every bank-account name correction?
No. Gazette may not be required where the issue is a minor spelling mistake, incomplete name or bank data-entry error and the correct name is already supported by accepted KYC documents.
Can I change my bank-account name using only a Gazette notification?
Not necessarily. The bank may also require a name-change form, updated identity document, PAN details, affidavit, marriage certificate, court order or other supporting record.
Can the bank insist on updated PAN or Aadhaar?
The bank may ask for an updated identity or tax record where it considers the Gazette alone insufficient to complete KYC verification.
Is an affidavit sufficient for a complete name change?
An affidavit may support the request but may not be sufficient by itself. The bank may additionally require Gazette publication and an identity document in the new name.
Is Gazette compulsory for a surname change after marriage?
Not in every case. Some banks may accept a marriage certificate and updated KYC documents. Gazette may be required depending on the bank and the available records.
Can the name change be completed online?
Some banks provide online or video-based facilities for eligible requests. A branch visit may still be required where original documents, signature verification or additional KYC checks are necessary.
Will the bank-account number change?
Ordinarily, a customer-name update does not require a change in the account number. The bank’s internal procedure will apply.
Will one request update every account in the same bank?
Not always. The customer should separately verify savings accounts, current accounts, fixed deposits, cards, loans, lockers and other linked products.
Can Gazette correct the name of a company bank account?
A personal Gazette notification cannot by itself change the legal name of a company or another registered entity. The entity must complete the prescribed registration process and submit updated organisational documents to the bank.
What if the Gazette and PAN contain different new names?
The discrepancy should be resolved before or during the bank application. The bank may return the request where the final name is not consistently supported.
Conclusion
Bank account name change through Gazette is appropriate mainly where the account holder has formally adopted a new name and needs a documentary connection between the earlier and proposed names. It should not be treated as compulsory for every minor spelling error or bank data-entry mistake.
Gazette publication also does not automatically update a bank account. The account holder must separately approach the bank, complete its prescribed request and satisfy the applicable KYC requirements. Depending on the case, the bank may ask for Gazette publication, updated identity proof, PAN details, marriage certificate, divorce decree, affidavit or court order.
The safest approach is to first compare the bank account with Aadhaar, PAN, Passport and other important records, classify the matter correctly and finalise one consistent version of the name. A properly planned process can help prevent repeated mismatches and reduce avoidable objections during future banking and financial transactions.
